Heritage

One man’s vision transformed an entire region forever. His name Carlos Montez Champalimaud.

CREATING HISTORY

ONE MAN'S VISION

Carlos Montez Champalimaud transformed an entire region forever. In 1922 the area was a wildly beautiful uninhabited coastline near Cascais, and Champalimaud carefully developed it, preserving its natural beauty and wilderness. His successors, second and third generations, followed through and have completed his dream. Oitavos Dunes, along with Oitavos estate, is a triumph of visionary thinking and contemporary design that pays respect to its outstanding natural setting.

A family heritage.

Warmth and hospitality.

Visionary Carlos Montez Champalimaud discovered this magnificent place on the Estoril Coast in 1908.

It was in the 1920’s that Champalimaud embarked on a bold vision to create a residential estate and tourist destination of exceptional quality on Portugal’s Atlantic Coast, near the fishing village of Cascais.

Extending along the coast between the sea, sand-dunes and pine trees, the 168-hectare of Quinta da Marinha is part of the Sintra – Cascais Natural Park.

Arthur Hills, one of the most respected golf course architects, carefully crafted Oitavos Dunes, working with the beautiful natural site overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, to create a world-class natural links golf course.

Debuting in 2001, Oitavos Dunes is recognised today as one of the finest natural links golf courses in the world.

Passionate about tourism, wine and gastronomy, the Champalimaud family also owns The Oitavos Hotel, and the vineyards of Quinta do Côtto and Teixeiró in Douro Valley.
